Open letter to Weird Al Yankovic and his band

Had the ultimate Weird Al fan experience, I met him and his band, and he even asked me to sing during the chorus of the finale. Just wanted to say thank you to Weird Al and his band.

Please excuse my rambling but I felt I had to share this with all of you.

I am a HUGE Weird AL fan. I have been since as long as I can remember. My first music album was Weird Al’s Food Album on cassette. The first Concert I ever attended was Weird Al Yankovic in Vancouver back in 1996 I even found it on youtube . I have every album and have seen him every time he came to town with the only exception being the time he toured Vancouver on my wedding day. So you get it, I freaking love the band and the music. I have always wanted nothing more than to meet him, shake his hand and tell him how much I appreciate his music.

Back in September I finally got that chance and so much more.

My wife knew I was a die hard fan so when the tickets were put on sale for the Vancouver show, she went ahead and bought me the VIP Mandatory Czar Package! It even fell on our wedding anniversary but she didn’t care because it meant so much to me. When she surprised me with the tickets she told me I would be going with my brother who was also a huge fan.

I can’t even begin to describe just how awesome this day was. My brother and I went down to the Venue a bit early to walk around downtown and enjoy ourselves. When we got near the venue I couldn't help but notice the tour busses there parked outside. Even tho I was going to meet the man himself after the show, I thought I’d hang around in hopes of catching a glimpse of him before as well.

While waiting, we did meet several members of the band, Steve Jay , Jim West, and Jon Bermuda Shwartz. All Class acts who took the time to take a picture with me and say hello. Seriously, these guys do not get enough credit for how awesome they are.

Then it happened, I spotted Al heading for the door. I yelled out “ AL?” and he turned around with a smile on his face. I felt a pang of guilt bothering him. I know some musicians like to just head into the venue to prepare for the show. Al did come over and sign a few autographs for some others who were waiting patiently. I thanked him profusely for taking the time to say hello and snap a picture with myself.

At this point I was totally fangirling (yes I’m a dude), my hero shook my hand and took a picture with me. I was on cloud 9 and the concert had not even started.

After the pre show festivities I settled into my seat. This was not just any seat. This seat was front row centre. Dead centre. WOW!

I have never sat so close for any concert in my life and what an amazing show. He played every favorite and the crowd went wild for it all. The man is an entertainer in every sense of the word.

During the finale, something incredible and life changing happened. Weird Al was belting out the final chorus to Yoda when he called on the audience to sing for him. During that portion he looked down at me, beckoned me to the stage and held out the microphone for me to sing.

That moment, the greatest moment of my life (sorry kids).

I will always remember it, I sang with everything I had, Al nodded in appreciation and the crowd went wild after I sang. I returned to my seat and the show finished. I was lucky enough that a few people caught it on their cell phones and uploaded it to youtub starts at 3:30 if the link doesn't work for you and this one here as well starts at 11:30 if the link doesn't work

I was elated, and the meet and greet was still after the show. When my turn in line came up to meet Al, He laughed as I thanked him for tossing me the mic. I asked him to record a quick hello to my daughter who is also a big fan. This means a lot to me as my daughter is about the same age I was when I started getting into his music. It makes me so proud that I can share the music with her.

If you have read this far, then thanks for letting me share this story with you.

If anyone knows of a way to share this story with Al or the guys from his band, then please do. I want them to know that they made this superfans life complete. There will never be another band who tops this for me.

Thank you to Al and his band. Thank you for your years of work and entertainment and for everything you do.

Here are the pics from before and after the show

a few more with the guys from the band, missed Rueben tho :-(

Edit #2

I thought I'd include a bonus story here, during the pre show party, I nearly broke my ankle during a polka party dance competition. Here's a few photos, but fair warning one of the pics is of my ankle all swollen and messed up
